ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team concluded its two-day meet with Navy and Miami University on Saturday (Sept. 21) at Canham Natatorium, taking to the pool for a non-scored session of sprint and relay races in a 50-meter pool.
"We're three weeks into training, but the team outperformed our expectations this weekend," said head coach Mike Bottom. "There was no pressure today. It was just about getting up on the blocks and racing. On deck, you can see they are growing and becoming a team. We'll get back to work on Monday and continue to get better every day."
"The divers were fantastic," said diving coach Mike Hilde. "The upperclassmen set the tone and led by example, while the freshmen showed no fear or hesitation despite it being their first competition. This was a great start for us, and it's only going to get better."
The Wolverines took five-of-six relays during the first half of the session:
• 200-meter Freestyle Relay: 1:47.27 (Maiocco, Krause, MacNeil, Pyshnenko)
• 800-meter Medley Relay: 9:36.22 (Venter, Tucker, Krolikowski, Sims)
• 400-meter Freestyle Relay: 3:58.51 (MacNeil, Tucker, Krause, Lau)
• 400-meter Medley Relay: 4:22.78 (MacNeil, Tucker, Glass, Krause)
• 800-meter Freestyle Relay: 8:39.50 (Glass, Krolikowski, Lau, Sims)
The second half of the meet saw swimmers race in 50-meter sprints in all four strokes. The Wolverines went 1-2-3 in the 50-meter butterfly, led by sophomore Maggie MacNeil (27.54), senior Vanessa Krause (28.77) and freshman Megan Glass (28.83).
The other winners included freshman Mariella Venter in the 50-meter backstroke (30.87), senior Miranda Tucker in the 50-meter breaststroke (33.67) and junior Daria Pyshnenko in the 50-meter freestyle (26.34).
The Wolverines are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Oakland Relays. The meet begins at 1 p.m. in Rochester, Michigan.
