ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team kicked off fall action on Friday (Sept. 20), as it picked up four singles wins and a pair of wins on the doubles court during the first day of the Wolverine Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Freshmen Andrea Cerdan and Nicole Hammond made successful debuts and accounted for two of Michigan's four singles wins on the afternoon. Cerdan picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Arizona State's Savannah Slaysman, taking control late in the first set for the win. Hammond was the first Wolverine off court, grabbing a 6-0, 6-4 win over Charlotte's Jenna Dean. Hammond won the first nine games of the match en route to the victory.
Junior Alyvia Jones and senior Bella Lorenzini were Michigan's other singles winners. Jones knocked off Charlotte's Rocio Safont, 6-2, 6-2, racing out to early leads in both sets. Lorenzini was a winner when her opponent was defaulted in the first game of the second set. Lorenzini had won the first set at love.
U-M went 2-2 on the doubles court. The Wolverines swept a pair of matches against Western Michigan and dropped both contests to Yale. Jones and senior Chiara Lommer teamed up for a 6-4 win, while sophomores Anca Craciun and Lanie Van Linge come through with the exact same score on the court next to them.
