ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team swept a pair of doubles matches from Michigan State and picked up four singles wins to highlight the second day of action at the Wolverine Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 21) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan went 2-1 on the doubles court, as it swept a pair of matches from the Spartans and dropped one to Notre Dame. U-M's two wins over Michigan State were 6-4 victories, that came from the pair of senior Lera Patiuk and freshman Nicole Hammond, along with the duo of sophomore Lanie Van Linge and junior Bella Lorenzini.
U-M grabbed four singles wins, courtesy of Cerdan, Hammond, Patiuk and sophomore Anca Craciun.
Craciun wasted little time in securing her match, dropping just one set to Western Michigan's Lindsey Ziegler in a 6-0, 6-1 win. Patiuk followed suit, dispatching of Western Michigan's Gabriela Slavova by a 6-1, 6-1 score.
Hammond moved her record on the weekend to 2-0 with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Yale's Caroline Dunleavy. Hammond was down, 5-4, in the second but won the next three games to wrap up the straight-sets victory.
Cerdan was the last Wolverine on court and came through with a dramatic three-set win. After she dropped the first set, 6-3, to Yale's Chelsea Kung, Cerdan bounced back for a 6-1 win in the second. She rode that momentum to open the third and raced out to a 3-0 lead. Kung slowly chipped away and eventually tied the match at 4.
Neither player could hold serve over the next three games as Kung went back to the line to serve out the match at 6-5. She raced out to a 40-15 lead but Cerdan fought off two match points before winning the deuce point, forcing a third-set tiebreaker.
Cerdan won the first point of the breaker and never trailed throughout, and led by as many as three points at 3-0. With the breaker tied at 5, Cerdan won the next two points to wrap up the 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5) win to conclude the day's action.
Michigan will conclude the Wolverine Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 22). U-M will start the day with doubles at 12:30 p.m., with singles to follow.
