TOLEDO, Ohio -- With three Wolverines among the top 10 finishers, the University of Michigan women's golf team used a final-round low 287 (-1) -- the only sub-par tally of the day -- to post an 874 54-hole tally to capture a runner-up finish Tuesday (Sept. 17) in Toledo's Glass City Invitational at the Inverness Club.
"We really had a solid start to our season," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "It's always great to bring home some hardware. Our group has clearly put in a great summer of work and brought a high intensity into the fall season. Every player in our lineup contributed with an even and/or under par round at this event.
"We were the low team round today, and proves that we can post a number under the gun and in contention. Being in the mix to win is contagious and we are excited to get going again."
The Wolverines sandwiched team tallies of one-under 287s around a 300 for the 874 total -- the seventh lowest in program history.
Sophomore Sophia Trombetta had a career-best outing to start her second season as she led U-M with her career-low-tying, third-place individual showing. Using six birdies, she opened the season tying her career low with a 70 (-2) before missed opportunities in the second led to a 75, which tied her for sixth after the first day. With an eagle and two more birdies in the final round, she paced U-M's charge and closed with a 71 (-1), which helped her move up three spots and finished third with a career-low 216 (E) tally -- a new best by 11 shots.
"I played really well this week and I couldn't be happier with the results," said Trombetta. "I hit the ball well and was putting myself in really good positions for birdies and converted a lot of them. Inverness was unbelievable. It's such a historic course and it was so fun to play."
In her collegiate debut, freshman Hailey Borja started with a career-low 71 (-1) and followed with a 72 (E). A couple of missed putts led to a 74, but her 217 tally gave her a fourth-place finish -- the best freshman finish for U-M women's golfer since 1995 when Sharon Park was fifth at the Spartan Invitational (Sept. 16-17).
"This week I was really confident with my game," said Borja. "My swing and putting felt solid out there. It's definitely a tough course, but the more of a challenge the more fun I have out there. I was pumped and kept my energy up as well which helped me get through the 36-hole day. The atmosphere in a college tournament is also what I loved because of all the spirit."
Senior captain Hannah Ghelfi rounded out U-M's top-10 finishers as she tied for ninth at 220 (70-77-73), while sophomore Ashley Lau tied for 37th (226) and junior Ashley Kim tied for 40th (227). Freshman Anika Dy also made her collegiate debut as an individual and tied for 40th (227)
"Hannah (Ghelfi), Sophia (Trombetta) and Hailey (Borja) played super solid all week," said Dowling. "This course demands good tee shots, approach shots and a great short game. It's a legit track and any course management mistake will make you pay. What an awesome way for Hannah and Sophia to start the season, and for Hailey to start her collegiate career. This way is pretty darn cool."
The Wolverines will return to tournament action at the end of September with a trip to Northwestern's Windy City Classic, Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played at the Glenview Golf Club in Glenview, Illinois.
