
Wolverine Trio Earns ITA Preseason Rankings

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team had three players featured in the 2019-20 Oracle Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Preseason National Rankings as announced Tuesday (Sept. 17).
Sophomore Andrew Fenty was ranked No. 30, while junior Mattias Siimar came in at No. 53. The duo also was ranked No. 50 in doubles. Freshman Ondrej Styler was selected as the nation's top freshmen/newcomer heading into the fall season.
Fenty completed last season with a number of accolades including ITA Freshman of the Year, ITA Midwest Freshman of the Year and Midwest Player to Watch, Big Ten Freshman of the Year and first team All-Big Ten his first year in Ann Arbor. The Washington, D.C., native recorded a 27-7 singles record and 21-7 doubles record his freshmen year, ranking in the top 32 for singles. Fenty's biggest victory clinched a 7-5 match against the No. 1-ranked singles player in the country, JJ Wolf of Ohio State, in straight sets and handed Wolf his first loss of the season.
Siimar ended his sophomore year with a 17-19 singles record and 20-11 doubles record. He ranked as high as No. 37 by the ITA in singles and No. 60 in doubles with Connor Johnston. Another accomplishment from Siimar last season came when he clinched the doubles point against rival Ohio State's No. 30 ranked doubles team.
Fenty and Siimar traveled to Napa, California, last weekend to play in the Napa Valley Tennis Classic, and both picked up one victory in singles and as a pair defeated Con Frantzen and Sven Lah of Baylor, 6-2.
Styler comes to Ann Arbor being ranked as high as No. 28 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior singles rankings and a combined ranking of 18. Styler earned a 2018 Junior French Open Championship in doubles and was the runner up at the 2018 Wimbledon Junior Tournament in doubles play and reached the round of 16 in singles. Styler also won a medal at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in doubles and made a doubles semifinals appearance at the Australian Open Junior Championships.
Next weekend (Sept. 20-22), Michigan will send members of the team to both coasts, as the Wolverines will participate in the Battle of the Bay Invitational in San Francisco, California, and the Ivy Plus in Princeton, New Jersey.
