LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Paced by his first career top-10 finish by senior Brent Ito, the University of Michigan men's golf team opened the 2019-20 season with an 883 54-hole total to finish 13th on Tuesday (Sept. 17) at Northwestern's Windon Memorial Classic at the Conway Farms Golf Club.
"It was not the start we were looking for to begin a new season," said U-M head coach Zach Barlow. "We had some good stretches of golf. However, we could not seem to sustain that momentum. There are plenty of takeaways and things we can improve on from this week. It will be nice to get back out there and play right away in Toledo."
The Wolverines got off to solid start to start the Barlow era as the Wolverines opened the Windon with a 287 (-1) total, highlighted by a 69 (-2) from Ito, a 70 (-1) from junior Charlie Pilon and an even-par 71 from junior Henry Spring. The Wolverines could not capitalize on the first round's momentum as the Maize and Blue slipped off the pace with a 299 second-round total to close the day with a 586 36-hole and an 11th place position.
Despite final round tallies of 70 (-1) from Ito and a 72 (+1) from Pilon, the Wolverines improved with a 297 total, but dropped two positions to finish 13th in the season-opening event.
Despite the team finish, Ito led the Wolverines as he began his final campaign sandwiching two sub-par rounds of 69 (-2) and 70 (-1) around a 73 (+2) to help produce a 212 (-1) total, which gave him his first career top-10 finish as he tied for ninth. Overall, Ito finished with 12 birdies during the 54-hole event.
"Brent really competed this week and I am very proud of that," said Barlow. "He's a fiery guy and has that 'never give up' attitude which makes it easy to coach him. Although I don't think he had his complete 'A' game or 'best stuff,' he was able to manage his game and control his emotions to post a solid top-10 finish on a difficult golf course."
Behind Ito was Pilon, who tied for 30th with a 217 (70-75-72), and Spring, who tied for 63rd with a 228 (71-82-75). Freshman Kevin Healy played in his first collegiate event as an individual and finished 77th (242).
U-M will waste little time heading back to tournament action as the Wolverines will head down US-23 to Toledo, Ohio, Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 23-24), for the Inverness Intercollegiate at the Inverness Club. Hosted by Toledo, the two-day, 54-hole event will feature the last 3-4 hours of the final round broadcast live on ESPN3.
