CHICAGO, Ill. -- University of Michigan graduated senior rower Emily Krebs (Lake in the Hills, Illinois/Huntley) and graduated senior basketball forward Charles Matthews (Chicago, Illinois/St. Rita) were named the winners of the 2019 Ernest T. Sigler Award by the University of Michigan Club of Greater Chicago on Tuesday (July 9).
The Award is presented annually to U-M's best male and female student-athletes from the Chicago area.
Krebs is the first rowing program recipient of this award, which has been given since 1977. The distinction comes after she helped lead the Wolverines to the program's first Big Ten Championship since 2012, and a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships with a program-record 119 points. Krebs rowed bow in the first varsity four boat (1V4) at both events. She helped the four win silver at the Big Ten Championships and it followed up by beating its No. 5 seeding to place fourth at the national regatta. Krebs was part of the Big Ten Boat of the Week, Michigan's 1V4, on April 23. Krebs graduated from U-M with a degree in biomechanical engineering, and she is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
After transferring from Kentucky, Matthews was instrumental in scout team preparations as a sophomore, helping U-M eventually win the 2017 Big Ten Tournament title. In his first eligible season, he helped the Wolverines to a program-record 33 wins, a second straight Big Ten Tournament title, the NCAA Final Four and national title game. After testing the NBA Draft waters, Matthews returned to Ann Arbor for his senior campaign. Posting 12.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, Matthews helped the Maize and Blue to a second straight 30-win season, a third straight trip to the Big Ten Tournament championship game and a third straight NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. He received All-Big Ten honorable mention as well as a second straight Academic All-Big Ten award. In his two active seasons, he helped U-M amass a 63-15 record.
The award is named after Ernest T. Sigler, who served as the executive director of the U-M Club of Greater Chicago for 35 years.
