ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan water polo student-athlete Maddy Steere was selected to the Australia national team roster for the 2019 FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, July 14-27.
This will be Steere's second World Championships with Australia as she was a member of the team that placed eighth at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Steere joined the national team following the 2019 season and helped it to a fifth-place finish at the FINA World League Super Final in Budapest last month.
She is no stranger to the national team, having been a member for the last three years. Prior to that, she won a gold medal at the 2015 World University Games and competed at the Youth World Championships as well.
This past season at Michigan, Steere led the Wolverines to the NCAA Tournament and a CWPA Championship for the fourth consecutive season. She tallied 55 goals and 42 assists on her way to an ACWPC second team All-American honor, the CWPA Player of the Year award and was an All-CWPA first team honoree.
The Aussie Stingers will begin against Italy on July 14 at the World Championships, the last major competition ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Also in the Stingers' group in Budapest are China and Japan.
