
Steere, Australia Claim Bronze at FINA World Championships

GWANGJU, South Korea -- University of Michigan water polo rising senior Maddy Steere helped lead Australia to a bronze medal finish at the 2019 FINA World Championships.
In the bronze medal game on Friday (July 26), Australia edged Hungary, 10-9. The Aussie Stingers got off to a fast start with the first three goals of the game and eventually led, 10-7, before staving off a Hungary comeback in the final minutes.
Australia lost its semifinal matchup with eventual champion Team USA, 7-2. The Stingers beat out Russia in the quarterfinals, 9-7, and Kazakhstan in the preliminary round, 13-3.
During the group stage, Australia finished second behind Italy with a 2-1 record. After starting the tournament with a narrow 10-9 loss to Italy, the Stingers bounced back with a 14-12 victory over China and 9-7 win over Japan.
The medal was the first for Steere with the senior national team and her first since claiming gold at the 2015 World University Games.
