COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan softball team shook off a sluggish start to break through in the third and built its lead over several innings, earning an 8-0, six-inning decision to clinch its final regular-season series at Maryland on Saturday (May 4) at Maryland Softball Stadium. The Wolverines have won 10 straight games and 27 of their last 28.
Michigan posted double-digit hits for the sixth time in eight games. Senior second baseman Faith Canfield went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI to headline the Wolverine offense, while junior third baseman Madison Uden and sophomore shortstop Natalia Rodriguez posted two hits apiece. Uden opened up a breakthrough three-run fourth with a leadoff solo homer on the inning's first pitch.
Canfield scored the game's first run in the third frame, using savvy baserunning and an errant throw to cross on a double-steal attempt with two outs. Uden doubled up the Wolverine advantage with her solo home run to center field in the fourth -- her sixth long ball of the season -- and, after another run on a sacrifice fly, Canfield laced a two-out RBI single through the left side to cushion the lead.
Rodriguez plated another two-out run with an RBI single in the fifth before the Wolverines pushed into run-rule territory with a three-run sixth. Michigan scored runs in three consecutive at-bats, including RBI singles from senior first baseman Alex Sobczak and Uden.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Alex Storako (14-6) allowed five hits and two walks and struck six en route to her fourth complete-game shutout of the season. She got into -- and out of -- a couple jams, putting runners on third in the second and third innings before using strikeouts to strand them.
Rodriguez likely saved a run in the third with web-gem diving stop on a single to the 5-6 hole to keep the ball on the infield and keep the Terrapin runner at third. Storako followed with a strikeout, looking, to end the threat.
Michigan (39-11, 21-1 Big Ten) will wrap up its regular season with its series finale at Maryland Sunday, May 5 at Maryland Softball Stadium. The game is slated for a 2 p.m. start and will be aired live on the Big Ten Network.
