ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) named its 2019 Women's Division I All-America team on Thursday (May 30) with University of Michigan student-athletes Maddy Steere, Julia Sellers and Abby Andrews receiving national recognition. Steere was named to the All-America second team, Sellers earned a spot on the third team, and Andrews received honorable mention.
Steere, a junior from Pascoe Vale, Australia, continued to improve upon previous years' performances with her spot on the ACWPC All-America second team. She was a third-team selection in 2018 and was honorable mention as a freshman in 2017. She joins Betsey Armstrong and Leah Robertson as the only individuals in school history to make first, second or third team two times.
This season Steere was the CWPA Player of the Year and led her team to a fourth straight CWPA championship and NCAA appearance. She was All-CWPA first team and a three-time CWPA Player of the Week selection. She finished with 55 goals, 42 assists, 97 points, 28 drawn exclusions, 25 steals and 12 field blocks in 32 games.
Sellers, a senior from Santa Ana, California, made the leap to third team ACWPC All-America honors after receiving honorable mention as a junior last year. In her final year at Michigan, she led the team with 65 goals to go with 19 assists, 84 points, 36 drawn exclusions, 22 steals, 10 field blocks and 28 sprints won in 32 games. She was named CWPA Championship MVP and was second team All-CWPA.
Andrews, a freshman from Indooroopilly, Australia, joined the team in January as a mid-year enrollee but made an immediate impact. With just three weeks to learn the system, she adjusted quickly and ended the year with 57 goals, 71 assists, 128 points, 47 steals, 13 field blocks and 41 sprints won. She set U-M freshman records for assists and points, with both totals ranking second most in a single season at U-M. She set school records for assists per game (2.22) and points per game (4.0) on the way to earning CWPA Rookie of the Year, CWPA Rookie of the Tournament and All-CWPA second team honors. She earned seven CWPA Rookie of the Week awards.
The Wolverines had three earn All-America recognition for the first time since 2016, and it was just the second time in program history that two were named to the first, second or third teams. The 2005 season was the only other year with Armstrong and Shana Welch earning third-team honors.
