ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Redshirt senior thrower Bailey Baker made the most of an already special Senior Day atmosphere at the Len Paddock Open on Friday (May 3) as the University of Michigan women's track and field team closed out its regular season.
Baker twice broke the school record in the hammer throw en route to the win in that event and followed it up later in the day with a career-best victory in the discus, taking center stage in what also was the first-ever home meet at the new U-M Outdoor Track and Field Stadium.
Competing against the likes of regional opponents from the Mid-American Conference and Canada, the Wolverines racked up seven victories, four more runner-up finishes and 23 total top-five performances as they now turn their attention fully to the Big Ten Championships next Friday through Sunday (May 10-12) at Iowa.
Baker accounted for two of those wins, with her first coming in the hammer throw to kick off the day. After fouling her first attempt, she reeled off three consecutive throws that exceeded her pre-meet personal record of 59.32m (194 feet, 7 inches), including a 61.60m (202-1) heave in the third round. That mark exceeded by nearly a meter the 16-year-old mark of 60.74m (199-3) that was set by April Phillips at this same meet in 2003.

Bailey Baker @Baker_Bails goes 61.60m (202-1) to break a 16-year old hammer throw record by nearly a full meter!
Previous record was 60.74m (199-3) by April Phillips at this meet in 2003#MeatFactory #ThrowBlue #GoBlue pic.twitter.com/pPTg25ijzU
On her final throw, Baker would push that record out even further as she went 61.90m (203-1) to cement her status as the greatest hammer thrower in Michigan history.
She will have at least two more opportunities to build on her historic Friday. She now ranks fifth on the Big Ten leaderboard in the event and will contend for that title next weekend, and she has also firmly clinched her berth to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds two weekends later. There, she will look to finish top-12 in the region and earn a trip to the NCAA Championships in June.
She now ranks 25th in the East Region.
While she did not set another school record in the discus, she moved up No. 5 in school history with a winning mark of 51.09m (167-7), again on her final throw. That throw was an improvement by more than four feet over her pre-meet personal record in the event, and put her in more competitive position at the Big Ten and East Region levels.
At present, she ranks No. 8 in the conference and No. 29 in the region.
She was joined as a multiple-time winner by Aurora Rynda, despite not contesting her signature outdoor 800-meter event. Rynda claimed the 400-meter title in 56.11 in her collegiate debut in the event, and also ran a leg of the victorious 4x400 relay team with Emma Lane, Jenna Reid and Micaela DeGenero.
The 4x100 relay team of Sydney McGinley, Julia Hall, Jeryne Fish and Chloe Foster combined to get the win at the line in 46.80, as well.
Michigan also got individual victories from Katt Miner in the high jump at 1.66m (5-5.5) and Raquel Powers at 3,000 meters in a career-best 9:40.11.
Friday's meet also served as the final home competition in the careers of several Wolverine seniors, including Baker, Sydney Badger, Rachel Coleman, Kayla Deering, Erin Finn, Claire Kieffer-Wright, Mary Kate McNamara, Hannah Meier and Lauren Rodriguez. Not all competed, but all were honored post-meet with a commemorative framed jersey.
