ORLANDO, Fla. -- Junior Chiara Lommer and senior Brienne Minor recorded straight-sets wins to highlight the first day of action for the University of Michigan women's tennis team at the NCAA Singles Championship on Monday (May 20) at the USTA National Campus.
Minor started the day with a Michigan win, dispatching of No. 48-ranked Olivia Hauger of California, 6-1, 6-4.
It was all Minor in the first set as she raced out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back in the 6-1 win. She found herself in a 4-1 hole in the second before ripping off five straight games to complete the straight-sets win.
Lommer came through with the first upset of the day, taking out No. 4-ranked and seeded Ingrid Gamarra Martins of South Carolina. Lommer came through with a timely break in the first set, going up a break at 4-3. The lefty rode the momentum from there, winning the next two games for a 6-3 first-set win.
Lommer broke Martins for a 3-1 lead in the second set and was able to hold on a deuce point during her ensuing service game to keep the break and take a 4-1 lead.
Lommer had one match point on Martins' serve at 5-2, but Martins won the deuce point to force Lommer back to the line to serve it out. Lommer jumped out to a 40-15 lead, but Martins fought off another two match points to send it to a deuce point. Lommer made good on her fourth match point of the afternoon when Martins sent a backhand wide.
Senior Kate Fahey dropped a three-set match to No. 20-ranked Sara Daavettila of North Carolina to bring an end to her illustrious singles career. Fahey is Michigan's all-time leader in singles wins (132) and winning percentage (.815) after putting together a 38-6 senior season.
Fahey fell down a break early in the first and could never make up the difference, dropping a 6-3 first set.
Fahey broke to start the second and then held off two break points in her next service game to keep the break. She kept the distance the rest of the way, winning on her second attempt to serve out the set, wrapping up a 6-4 win after a Daavettila forehand was too strong.
Following a 10-minute break due to heat between the second and third sets, Fahey broke Daavettila at love to start the third. Daavettila answered right back with a break of her own to keep the set on serve at 1-1. The breaking continued as neither player could hold serve in their next service games to keep the frame at 2-2.
Fahey broke Daavettila again, grabbing a 4-3 lead but could not hold on her own serve to keep the set level at 4-4. Fahey had another opportunity on Daavettila's serve on the deuce point, but could not capitalize as the Tarheel held for a 5-4 lead.
Fahey went back to serve to stay in the match but lost four straight points to seal Daavettila's win.
Lommer and Minor will be back in action Tuesday (May 21) for the second round of the singles tournament, while Fahey and Minor will begin doubles action.
