FLOURTOWN, Pa. -- Senior Nick Carlson's opening-round 71 (+1) and sophomore Charlie Pilon's 72 (+2) paced the University of Michigan men's golf team as the Wolverines posted a 299 first-round team total Friday (April 26) and positioned themselves 12th after the first day of the Big Ten Championships at the Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course.
"It was nice to see good opening rounds from Nick (Carlson) and Charlie (Pilon) today," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "The course played difficult and that showed in the scores for the entire field. Our other three guys had opportunities for sure and will be ready to play very well tomorrow to move us back into position."
After teams started the conference championship early Friday morning, play was halted due to lightning and heavy rains in the area. The Maize and Blue, which started off the back nine (hole No. 11), got it two holes in before being pulled off the course. After an hour, play resumed and the 14-team field was able to complete the first round.
Carlson birdied his second hole of the day before the delay, and when he returned to the course he bogeyed three of his next six holes to make the turn to the front side two over par. On the front side, Carlson used birdies on Nos. 3 and 7 to draw even as he added seven pars. On his final hole, he missed the green but chipped to 10 feet before missing his par putt on the par-3 10th hole. Despite that blemish, his 71 positioned him among the top 10 as he is tied for eighth.
For Pilon, three birdies (Nos. 7, 9, 17) erased three bogeys, but a double-bogey on the 16th hole had him finish two-over with a 72 and put him tied for 15th after the first 18 holes. Sophomore Henry Spring and freshman Patrick Sullivan are both tied for 55th after carding 78s, while fifth-year senior Ian Martin is tied for 68th with an 81.
In a new NCAA golf policy adopted this year, teams are allowed to substitute golfers during a championships, so U-M will replace Martin with freshman Ben Dunne for the second round. The Wolverines will be paired with Maryland and Wisconsin for the second round starting at 10:25 a.m. off the 11th tee.
