MAINVILLE, Ohio -- Freshman Ashley Lau's opening-round 73 (+1) has her among the top 10, while a 74 (+2) from senior Elodie Van Dievoet helped the University of Michigan women's golf team open the 2019 Big Ten Championships with a 298 on Friday (April 19), positioning the Wolverines sixth after the first 18 holes of 54 at the TPC River's Bend.
"We had a really nice start to our day, in some wet and cold conditions," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "The team knows they can still make birdies and we are right in the mix of things. Our focus is to commit fully on every shot, and stick to our really solid game plan. Tomorrow is moving day, and we are excited."
Opening play paired with Indiana and Ohio State, which both tallied 294 team totals and are tied for second, the Maize and Blue got off to a solid start recording eight of its 11 total birdies on the opening nine holes. With two birdies from Lau and junior Alisa Snyder, Michigan made the turn one-under par.
With rainy and chilly conditions catching up to the field on the back nine, scores elevated slightly for the field, but the Wolverines grinded out 40 pars in 54 total holes. Freshman Sophia Trombetta led the second-nine charge with eight pars. After a slow start to her round as she turned four-over he closed with a 77 and is tied for 41st.
As she has done for the last three U-M events, rookie Lau leads the Wolverines with her 73, putting her tied for seventh -- just two shots back of first-day leaders Melati Putri (Purdue), Kornkamol Sukaree (Illinois) and Kari Bellville (Indiana), who all posted 71s (-1).
Van Dievoet, the 2017 Big Ten champion,  shot a 74 to place her tied for 17th, while Snyder's 75 has her tied for 27th. Overall all six Wolverines are among the top 50 in the 84-player field.
The championship continues Saturday (April 20) with 18 holes beginning at 9:24 a.m. The Wolverines will be paired with Purdue and Michigan State, who both tallied 297 first-round team totals.
