AUSTIN, Texas -- The quartet of freshman Patrick Callan, junior Charlie Swanson, senior Mokhtar Al-Yamani and junior Felix Auböck finished 14th in the 800-yard freestyle relay (6:15.63) to lead the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team on the opening night of the NCAA Championships on Wednesday (March 27) at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Texas won the event -- the only one of the night -- and leads the team race (40 points).
Swimming in the final heat next to the Longhorns, the Wolverines were able to stay in the mix for points on the back half. The two fastest splits of the relay came from Al-Yamani (1:34.00) and Auböck (1:32.78). It was an incredibly fast race, however. It took a 6:14.75 to make top eight last year, compared to 6:12.28 on Wednesday. U-M improved its time by about one-and-a-half seconds over last year but ultimately finished one spot lower.
The NCAA Championships continue Thursday (March 28) with the first full day of action at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. CDT with finals following at 6 p.m. CDT.
