AUSTIN, Texas -- An All-American finish from sophomore Ricardo Vargas in the 500-yard freestyle and two scoring swims in consolation finals from freshman Patrick Callan (500-yard freestyle) and sophomore Luiz Gustavo Borges (50-yard freestyle) paced the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team on Thursday (March 28) at the NCAA Championships. After two days at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center, the Wolverines sit in a tie for 16th place (30 points).
Vargas made the final of the 500-yard freestyle for the second year in a row, earning fourth (4:12.21) after an eighth-place finish last year as a freshman. After swimming on the relay last night, Callan had a great first individual swim to earn points, moving up a spot in finals to take 10th overall (4:13.27). Junior Felix Auböck was 35th (4:18.40).
Sophomore Luiz Gustavo Borges added points to the team total in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing 15th (19.32) -- a one-spot improvement after getting the 16th and final spot in the morning's preliminaries by .01 seconds.
Three swimmers took to the water in the 200-yard IM. Junior Tommy Cope, in his first swim of the week, was 20th (1:43.36) to lead the way, while classmates Charlie Swanson was 45th (1:45.66) and Jacob Montague were 48th (1:45.84), respectively.
For the first time in 20 years, U-M had two divers competing on the one-meter springboard at the NCAA Championships. Junior Jake Herremans was in his debut at the big meet, finishing 27th (281.45), while sophomore Ross Todd took 42nd (240.90).
The Wolverines began the day with the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing 19th (1:17.99). The foursome of Borges, junior James Jones, junior Miles Smachlo and freshman Will Chan weren't seeded to score coming in, but managed to move up four spots from their seed time despite not getting a second swim.
The foursome of redshirt sophomore Alex King, junior Jeremy Babinet, Smachlo and Borges finished 25th in the 400-yard medley relay to end the morning's preliminaries (3:08.04).
The NCAA Championships roll on Friday (March 29) at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. CDT with finals following at 6 p.m. CDT.
