BERKELEY, Calif. -- The No. 6 University of Michigan water polo team saw its seven-game win streak come to an end on Sunday (March 17) in an 11-7 loss on the road to No. 4 California at the Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Michigan played outstanding for three quarters and had the Golden Bears on the ropes, but Cal put together a big fourth quarter, outscoring the Wolverines 5-0 to take the win.
The Wolverines came out firing against the Golden Bears and built a 3-0 lead over the first 3:22 of the game. Freshman Abby Andrews, senior Kim Johnson and senior Julia Sellers all scored to put Michigan out front.
Cal battled back to make it 3-2, but junior Maddy Steere made it 4-2 with 1:49 to go in the period on her penalty shot. Freshman Erin Neustrom battled inside to draw the penalty.
After the Golden Bears scored twice in the first two minutes of the second quarter, Michigan regained its footing and finished the half strong. Andrews notched her second goal on a shot from the outside, then sophomore Kathy Rogers found an opening inside to score and make it 6-4 at the half.
Two California goals brought the game to a tie at 6 in the third quarter, but Michigan regained the lead with just 13 seconds remaining in the period when Andrews scored her third of the game.
Andrews would finish with three goals and one assist. Johnson had a nice all-around game with one goal, one assist, three drawn exclusions and a field block. Junior goalkeeper Heidi Ritner made seven saves.
U-M will close out the regular season against former CWPA conference member Indiana on Saturday (March 23) at 10:30 a.m. in Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines will honor seniors Delaney Cleveland, Kim Johnson and Julia Sellers prior to the game, which will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
