CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team fell to Michigan State, 65-60, in the Big Ten Tournament championship game on Sunday (March 17) at the United Center.
MSU finished the game on a 10-0 run in the closing two minutes of the contest to secure the victory over Michigan. Freshman Ignas Brazdeikis led the Wolverines with 19 points, while Jordan Poole netted 13 and Jon Teske added 10.
Junior Zavier Simpson dished out 10 assists against the Spartans and collected 30 total in the Big Ten Tournament.
Teske added 10 rebounds and three blocks to his stat line to go along with his 10 points for his 10th career double-double.
Brazdeikis rattled off Michigan's first nine points before Poole and Teske hit four straight free throws to bring Michigan within four of Michigan State, 17-13, with 8:50 remaining in the first half. Minutes later, Teske and Simpson took control of the offense, combining for six straight points to put Michigan up, 21-17, late in the first half of the contest.
The Michigan defense stifled the MSU offense in the closing minutes of the half as the Spartans did not score in the final 2:22, and the Wolverines carried a 31-23 advantage into the locker room. Brazdeikis led U-M with 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor and Simpson had six helpers in the opening half.
The Wolverines opened up the second half with back-to-back long-range makes and used two free throws to get out to 39-26 lead. Michigan State slowly inched its way back into the contest, coming within two before a Teske dunk put Michigan back up by four, 48-44, with under 10 minutes to play.
MSU tied the game at 48 all before four straight points from the Wolverines put the lead back into their hands with over five minutes to play. The Spartans tied the game at 60 with just over a minute left and used a Winston layup to take the lead for good with just 28 seconds remaining in the contest.
