The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (5-3, 1-0 Big Ten) returns to the Varsity Tennis Center this week for a trio of matches, hosting Virginia (10-4) on Wednesday (March 13) at 2 p.m. before welcoming a pair of Big Ten opponents over the weekend. U-M will resume Big Ten action with Nebraska (8-8, 0-0 Big Ten) on Saturday (March 16) and Iowa (8-4, 0-1 Big Ten) on Sunday (March 17), with both matches beginning at noon.
Wolverine Bites
• Michigan returns to the Varsity Tennis Center this week to kick off a busy March at home. Michigan will play six of its seven matches this month at home, hosting Virginia, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Penn State and Ohio State during the stretch. U-M is 4-1 at the VTC this season.
• The Wolverines resume Big Ten action this weekend, hosting Nebraska and Iowa. U-M is 1-0 this season in the conference after defeating Michigan State earlier this season (Feb. 2). Michigan will play 11 Big Ten matches this season and will not face Indiana or Wisconsin during the slate.
• U-M is 112-6 in Big Ten play under 12th-year head coach Ronni Bernstein. Michigan went 10-1 last season during conference play and has a 1-0 record this season.
• No. 25 Virginia (10-4) features one ranked singles player in No. 33 Meghan Kelley, along with three ranked doubles teams. The Hoos lead the all-time series against Michigan, 4-2, but U-M took a 4-3 win the last time the teams faced each other at the VTC (March 10, 2017). Brienne Minor and Chiara Lommer each won singles matches for the Wolverines in that match.
• Nebraska (8-8, 0-0 B1G) comes to Ann Arbor on a two-match skid after losing to Washington State and Iowa State. Michigan is 7-0 all-time against Nebraska after defeating the Huskers, 4-3, last season in Lincoln. Nebraska is beginning conference action against the Maize and Blue.
• Iowa (8-4, 0-1 Big Ten) will play at Michigan State on Saturday (March 16) before coming to the VTC on Sunday (March 17). U-M is 38-11 all-time against Iowa and has won 17 straight against the Hawkeyes after a 6-1 win last season.
• The Wolverines remained in the top 25 in this week's Oracle/ITA Rankings, coming in at No. 22. The rankings have switched from a poll to a computer ranking for the rest of the season.
• U-M is 5-0 this season when it wins the doubles point, getting victories over Ole Miss, Michigan State, Texas, Pepperdine and Baylor when securing the match's first point.
• The Wolverines have five players who have reached double-digit singles wins in Kate Fahey (22), Brienne Minor (15), Chiara Lommer (15), Giulia Pairone (13) and Alyvia Jones (10). Minor leads the group with six dual-match wins, with Fahey and Pairone each notching five.
• The Wolverines have two non-conference matches remaining, hosting Virginia on Wednesday (March 13) and heading to Florida on April 11.
• Michigan features four ranked singles players in No. 4 Kate Fahey, No. 21 Chiara Lommer, No. 29 Brienne Minor and No. 89 Giulia Pairone.
• Senior Kate Fahey heads into the match with a 22-5 singles record this season. Fahey swept the titles at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship and finished as the singles runner-up at the ITA Fall National Championships. Fahey is 116-28 in singles during her illustrious career, putting her fourth all-time in wins. Fahey is closing in on volunteer assistant Ronit Yurovsky's third-place total of 117. Fahey's .806 winning percentage is tops in Michigan history. Emina Bektas (129) and Sarah Lee (125) occupy the top two spots on the all-time wins list.
