LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Senior Emyre Cole and sophomores Cameron Bock and Jacob Moore of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team all qualified for the event finals during the preliminary session of the 2019 Winter Cup Challenge on Friday (Feb. 15) at the South Point Hotel.
The trio of current Wolverines will join U-M alumni Sam Mikulak (2011-14), the Winter Cup all-around runner-up, and Adrian de los Angeles (2012-15) in the competition's final session Sunday (Feb. 17) starting at 7:15 p.m. PST. Individual event champions will be determined via a combined two-day score, and the five Wolverines will compete together, starting on still rings.
Finalists were determined using the USAG 10-point system that awards points to the top 10 scorers in each event. Mikulak had the most points in the preliminary session (35), while de los Angeles (12), Bock (9), Moore (7) and Cole (6) qualified by finishing among the top 28.
With the all-around title on the line on day one, Bock tied de los Angeles for 10th place with an 80.500 total. Bock's lone top-10 event score came on pommel horse with a 13.95, the third-best mark.
The 2018 NCAA runner-up on floor exercise, Moore placed 21st in the all-around with a 78.050 and found his groove on the floor with a difficulty score of 5.6 and a stellar execution mark of 8.8 for a 14.40, putting him in fourth heading to the event finals.
Cole joins Moore in the top five on floor exercise after marking a 14.25. Freshman Kevin Penev also excelled on the floor exercise, earning his top ranking with a 13.55 that was good for a tie for 14th place, but he did not qualify for day two of the competition.
Mikulak narrowly missed his second consecutive Winter Cup all-around title, placing second with a score of 84.450, just .050 behind winner Yul Moldauer (84.500). Mikulak had the night's top score on a pair of apparatuses, with a 15.00 on floor exercise and a 15.10 on high bar, while de los Angeles had the second-best score on parallel bars (14.15) and was ninth on pommel horse (13.30).
