STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team fell behind by four points with 3:23 to go, but ended the game on a 10-2 run behind six points from freshman Naz Hillmon and four from senior Nicole Munger to record a 66-62 win over Penn State on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 10) at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Penn State grabbed a 60-56 lead with 3:23 remaining but Michigan never wavered. Hillmon made good on a pair of free throws with 2:55 on the clock and then converted a layup to tie the game at 60 at the 2:26 mark. Hillmon continued to be a force after getting fouled on a defensive rebound, sending her to the line where she converted another pair with 2:14 to go for a 62-60 Michigan lead.
After Penn State countered with a pair at the line to knot the score at 62 with 2:07 to go, Munger hit a hanging jumper from the elbow to beat the shot clock with just 1:38 left to nudge Michigan back in front.
Michigan got two stops on the defensive end and Munger corralled a rebound with five ticks left. She calmly headed to the line and made the game a two-possession contest at 66-62. Penn State's final triple fell off the rim and Michigan left Happy Valley with its fourth straight win.
Sophomore Hailey Brown hit a career-best six three-pointers in the contest, finishing with 20 points and six rebounds. Hillmon tallied her second straight double-double, going for 20 points and 11 rebounds, with sophomore Deja Church chipping in 10 points. Munger had nine points and five rebounds, as senior Hallie Thome had seven rebounds and six assists.
Michigan held an early 7-4 lead after a corner triple from Munger, but PSU ripped off a 12-0 run to force a Michigan timeout with 1:09 left.
Out of the timeout, Michigan countered with a 5-0 spurt on a Brown triple and a junior Kayla Robbins layup to get within four points, 16-12, at the end of the first.
Penn State stretched its lead to nine points, 25-16, with 4:52 to go in the second period. Michigan slowly chipped away at lead, largely from the three-point shooting of Brown. She hit three triples over a 3:06 span, helping Michigan climb within one point, 30-29, on her fourth long ball of the game with just 41 ticks left.
Church drew a shooting foul with 1.9 seconds left before the half and sank both free throws to give Michigan a 31-30 lead at intermission.
Michigan will return home to Crisler Center on Thursday (Feb. 14), hosting Indiana at 7 p.m. [ Tickets ]
