LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team took its first setback of the season, falling at No. 1 Louisville, 58-43, on Tuesday night (Dec. 3) in a Big Ten/ACC Challenge game at the KFC Yum! Center.
Senior Zavier Simpson became just the fourth Wolverine to eclipse 500 assists tallying three against the Cardinals to bring his career total to 502. Simpson joins the likes of Gary Grant (731), Rumeal Robinson (576) and Antoine Joubert (539) in Michigan annals, while also becoming the 39th player in Big Ten history to dish out 500 career helpers.
Senior Jon Teske recorded his 13th career double-double and third of the season, finishing the night with a team-best 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior Eli Brooks pulled down a career-high seven boards, while Isaiah Livers and Brandon Johns Jr. each added five rebounds. Simpson scored nine points, while Livers had two blocks. Franz Wagner chipped in five points and a block.
The Michigan defense held Louisville to 36.7 percent shooting from the field and 21.1 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
Both teams struggled offensively to start the game, as the first shot did not fall until almost two minutes in with Louisville scoring first. Following the first make of the game, Teske broke a three-minute Michigan scoring drought to bring the Wolverines within three, 7-4, with 13:22 remaining in the first half.
The Cardinals slowed the U-M offense for a span 2:17 and went on an 11-1 run to take an 18-5 lead and forced Michigan to use a timeout. Louisville continued to build on its lead as Michigan fell behind by 10, 28-18, going into the halftime break.
Teske led the Wolverines with eight points and six boards, while Brooks added six boards in the opening half.
Michigan found its offense out of the break as it quickly created an 8-0 run, capped off with two Teske free throws, to cut the Louisville lead to four, 30-26, with under 17 minutes to play. The short run forced a Cardinal timeout and was followed by an 8-0 Louisville run to bring the lead back to double digits.
The Wolverines were unable to string long runs together and they trailed for the remainder of the contest.
Michigan will return to Crisler Center on Friday night (Dec. 6) when it opens Big Ten play against Iowa. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on FS1.
