ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team (No. 11 AP, No. 15 Coaches) dominated UMass Lowell wire to wire behind a career-best 25 points from senior Jon Teske in its 86-60 victory Sunday (Dec. 29) at Crisler Center.
The Wolverines win over the River Hawks closed out the non-conference season and gives Michigan its 10th win of the 2019-20 campaign. Michigan used 48 points in the paint and 27 points off the bench in its win and forced 13 UMass Lowell turnovers in the contest, with a team-best two steals from Cole Bajema in four minutes of play.
Teske was 11-of-14 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line to surpass his previous career best of 22 points set against Nebraska in the 2018-19 season. Senior Zavier Simpson also had a day on the court for Michigan, dishing out 10 against the River Hawks for the 13th double-digit game of his career while adding nine points and six rebounds to his stat line.
Junior Eli Brooks reached double-digit scoring with 15 points, draining three three-pointers for the Maize and Blue, while Austin Davis had seven points off the bench.
As a team, Michigan outrebounded UMass Lowell, 41-25, with sophomore Colin Castleton pulling down a career-best nine boards to pace the Wolverines on the glass and Teske adding eight.
The Wolverines came out of the gate and dominated the floor as Teske scored his first 10 points of the game in the first seven minutes of play. The Michigan defense quickly forced two UMass Lowell turnovers, and the Wolverines took a comfortable 19-7 advantage off a 9-0 run into the second media timeout of the half.
U-M continued to build on its advantage, extending its lead to 17, 34-17, on a David DeJulius three-pointer from the top of the arc with 4:59 remaining in the first stanza. Triples from Simpson, DeJulius and Brooks closed out the half with Michigan taking a 42-25 lead into the break.
Teske led the first-half scoring with 13 points and pulled down six rebounds, while Brooks scored nine in the first 20 minutes of play and Adrien Nunez dropped two three-pointers. Michigan shot 51.6 percent from the floor and made five three-pointers in the first half, while the bench contributed 13 points.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Brooks followed by an emphatic Teske dunk allowed Michigan to extend its lead to 66-37 with 12:20 left to play against UMass Lowell. Michigan maintained at least a 20-point lead in the remaining minutes.
U-M will return to Big Ten Conference play when it travels to East Lansing, Michigan, to play in-state foe Michigan State next Sunday (Jan. 5). Game time will be either 1:30 or 4:30 p.m. with the contest set to be featured on CBS.
