ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan wrestling head coach Sean Bormet announced Thursday afternoon (Nov. 7) that sophomore Mason Parris and fifth-year senior Jackson Striggow have been named captains for the 2019-20 season.
Parris, a native of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, is currently the No. 5-ranked heavyweight in the nation after kicking off his sophomore season with a 5-0 record at the MSU Open last Saturday (Nov. 2). Parris reached the NCAA Round of 12 as a true freshman and led the Wolverines with a 32-9 record and 13 falls. Over the summer, he captured the 125kg freestyle title at the Junior World Championships -- in just the third major freestyle tournament of his career. Parris is the first Wolverine sophomore to serve as a team captain since fellow heavyweight Adam Coon in 2014-15.
Striggow, an Orono, Minnesota, native, is a two-year starter at 197 pounds for the Wolverines. He owns a 64-36 career record, including a 19-13 dual mark, and has twice represented Michigan at the Big Ten Championships. Striggow, like Parris, is a student in U-M's School of Engineering, majoring in mechanical engineering.
Michigan will kick off the dual-meet portion of its 2019-20 season tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 8) when it hosts No. 17 North Carolina at 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
