The University of Michigan ice hockey team (3-4-1, 0-2-0 Big Ten) will host Minnesota (3-4-1, 0-1-1 Big Ten) in a two-game set on Friday (Nov. 8) at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday (Nov. 9) at 5 p.m. on Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena. Both games will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
The Series
Michigan and Minnesota will face off for the 284th time in program history on Friday night, with Minnesota holding a 140-126-17 advantage in the all-time series. The teams first met in January 1923 when Michigan fell, 2-0, in its state of Minnesota debut, but the Wolverines maintain a 67-51-9 advantage in Ann Arbor against the Golden Gophers.
Last season, the Maize and Blue went 1-2-1 in the regular season against Minnesota before having their season end on the road at Minnesota in the first round of the Big Ten playoffs.
Scouting the Gophers
Last weekend, Minnesota squared off in its first Big Ten opener against No. 4 Notre Dame. Although Friday night ended in a tie by ruling of the NCAA, the Gophers were able to sneak away with an extra Big Ten conference point thanks to an early goal by Sammy Walker in double overtime. Walker, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2018-19, leads the Gophers in goals (four) and total points (seven) in the eight games he has played.
Jared Moe has spent the majority of the season in net for Minnesota starting in five of eight games played. Behind him, former Michigan netminder, Jack Lafontaine, also has protected the net for Minnesota. Lafontaine has started three games this season recording a 3.43 goals-against average and an .878 save percentage.
The Golden Gophers head into Ann Arbor with an overall record of 3-4-1 and a Big Ten record of 0-1-1-1. Before facing Notre Dame in its Big Ten opener, Minnesota squared off against the defending national champions, Minnesota Duluth (3-3-0), in a home-and-home series. In the two games they played against the Bulldogs, the Golden Gophers found themselves behind in each of the games and unable to overcome the deficits.

Wolverine Bites
• Michigan continues to show its scoring depth this season as 11 different Wolverines have found the back of the net for the team's 18 total goals. Twenty players have registered points through the first eight games. Five players are tied atop the scoring column with four points apiece, including Jack Becker, Nick Pastujov, Cam York, Johnny Beecher and Eric Ciccolini.
• The Wolverines were swept last week on the road at No. 13 Ohio State, losing both games by a margin of one goal. Michigan jumped out to an early lead in the first game on a power-play goal by Nick Pastujov. But two third-period goals led the Buckeyes to a 3-2 victory. On Saturday in Columbus, Cam York scored his first career goal, tying the game at 1 late in the third period. But just two minutes later, the Buckeyes found the back of the net and finished the weekend sweep.
Emil Öhrwall netted his first career goal at Ohio State on Friday (Nov. 4). The goal came in the second period to give Michigan a 2-0 lead. On Saturday, Cam York scored his first career goal in the third period of game two.
