SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Senior Brent Ito finished as the top Wolverine for the third straight fall tournament as the University of Michigan men's golf team placed 12th with an 871 54-hole total today (Tuesday, Oct. 8) at Notre Dame's Fighting Irish Classic.
Using back-to-back 70s (-1) from Ito in Monday's (Oct. 7) two rounds, the Wolverines posted team totals of 294 and 289 to sit 11th after the first 36 holes at Warren Golf Course. With a career-low-tying 69 (-2) from junior Henry Spring and an even-par 71 from fellow junior Charlie Pilon in the third round, the Maize and Blue produced its lowest team tally of the tournament at 288 but dropped one position to finish 12th.
Ito's one-over-par 214 (70-70-74) put him in a tie for 23rd and gave him a third straight top-25 individual finish. So far this season, Ito has posted six of his nine rounds at or below par. In fact, through three events he has combined for a three-over total in 162 holes.
Pilon was two shots behind Ito as he tied for 29th with a season-low 216 (+3) total. After posting his second sub-par round (70) and tying his season low in the first round, he slipped off the pace with a 75 in the second. He rallied in the final round with 16 pars and a birdie for his 71 and a top-30 finish for the second time this fall.
Rounding out U-M's starting five, sophomore Ben Dunne tied for 56th at 224 (77-73-74), while Spring tied for 58th at 225 (71-75-69). Freshman Pier Francesco De Col made his collegiate debut and tied for 70th at 228 (77-71-80).
The Wolverines will not take long to resume competition, as U-M will head to Carmel, Indiana, on Sunday (Oct. 13) to start prepping for the Crooked Stick Invitational, Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 14-15). The two-day, 54-hole event will be held at Crooked Stick Golf Club.
