CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Freshman Anika Dy closed as the top-finishing Wolverine in her first career start as the University of Michigan women's golf team used a 293 final-round tally on Sunday (Oct. 13) to post an 878 54-hole total for a tie for 13th at UNC's Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational held at the Finley Golf Course.
"We were consistent in our scoring this week, but we were not able to get our team under par over the weekend," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "The course conditions and setup made the golf course very scoreable and we weren't able to capitalize on our solid ball striking and good course management.
"There were plenty of other positives including improved wedge play from last week in Chicago, but the putts just didn't drop for us often enough. We want to be putting ourselves back in the mix against these great fields and our team is talented and more than capable of competing with the best. We will get back after it this week in practice and qualifying to prepare ourselves for Wilmington."
For a second straight fall event, the Wolverines found themselves among another standout field as this week's event feature 14 of the 18 teams ranked among the nation's top 50 programs.
Starting the event and carding five birdies, Dy's career-low 70 (-2) helped the Wolverines post an opening 293 team tally in Friday's (Oct. 10) first round to position the Maize and Blue ninth. Following Dy's lead, sophomore Ashley Lau recorded five birdies of her own in her season-low second-round tally of 71 (-1), while freshman Hailey Borja's even-par 72 gave the Wolverines an improved team total of 292, but saw the Wolverines drop to a tie for 13th after 36 holes.
With the freshman duo of Borja and Dy, who carded closing rounds of 72 and 73, respectively, helped the Wolverines maintain its position as Michigan tallied a 293 final-round total to tie for 13th, along with Charlotte, with an 878 tournament total.
After opening the season playing as an individual in U-M's two opening events, Dy led the Wolverines in her first collegiate start and tied for 27th with a 217 (+1) total. Using her career-low 70 (-2) to start her event, she followed with rounds of 74 and 73 to guide the Wolverines.
Borja's final-round 72 (E) helped her to a 218 total and a tie for 32nd individually. She now has six of her nine fall rounds at or below par and has at least two rounds of par in all three events this season. She also has finished as the top or second-best Wolverine in all three tournaments this season. With her season-low 71 (-1) in the second round, Lau rounded out Michigan's top three finishers as she tied for 52nd at 222 (76-71-75).
After 12 days of training in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines will head back to North Carolina to play in the Landfall Tradition, Friday through Sunday, Oct. 25-27, at the Country Club of Landfall. The three-day, 54-hole event -- co-hosted by UNC Wilmington and Wake Forest -- will mark U-M's third straight, and seventh overall, visit to the Wilmington event.
