OXFORD, Miss. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team tied the match at 2, but No. 24-ranked Syracuse won the final two matches on court to knock off the Wolverines, 4-2, on Saturday (Jan. 26) in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off at Mississippi's William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center.
The Wolverines fell in an early 1-0 hole after dropping the doubles point as Syracuse used wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to seal the first point of the match.
Junior Giulia Pairone evened the match at 1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4. The junior took advantage of early breaks in both sets, including a 3-0 advantage in the second, to take the win.
Syracuse regained the upper hand behind a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 1, grabbing a 2-1 advantage.
Senior Brienne Minor leveled the match at 2 with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win at No. 2. After breezing to a first-set win, Minor was able to hang on and win the breaker in the second for her third straight singles win.
Syracuse picked up the third point of the match behind a three-set win at No. 3. Junior Chiara Lommer rallied back to force a third set after dropping the first, 6-2, with a 6-2 win of her own in the second. After tying the third set at 3, Lommer dropped the next three games as Syracuse regained the lead.
With attention turned to the final two courts, No. 5 and No. 6, both matches were in the early stages of the third set.
The Orange took the match by virtue of a three-set win at No. 5. Sophomore Alyvia Jones fell behind early in the third and could not catch up after splitting her first two sets. Jones was down, 4-2, in the second before winning two straight games to get back on serve at 4-4. Dina Hegab won the final two games to send the match to a third set, where she captured the 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 win. Â
Freshman Anca Craciun was up 5-4 in the third set at No. 6 when the match was abandoned. Â
Michigan will face No. 12 Ole Miss on Sunday (Jan. 27) in the consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off at 11 a.m. CST.
