ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team closed out the final day of the Michigan Invitational by taking two doubles matches from No. 14 Georgia Tech and five singles matches from Ohio State on Monday afternoon (Jan. 21) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Senior Kate Fahey won the singles title at the event, compiling a 3-0 record at the top spot and defeating Ohio State's Isabelle Boulais in straight sets Monday. Fahey broke on a deuce point to go up 4-3 in the second set before holding at 5-3. She broke Boulais for the second straight game to complete the 6-3, 6-3 win.
Junior Giulia Pairone finished the tourney with a 2-0 singles mark after dispatching of Danielle Wolf, 6-1, 6-4. After breezing to a first-set win, Pairone stayed on serve with Wolf through the first eight games of the second. Pairone broke though in the ninth game, breaking Wolf at love for a 5-4 lead. She served out the match in the next game.
Sophomore Bella Lorenzini finished with her second straight singles win in a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Emma DeCoste. Lorenzini took advantage of a late break in the second and served out the match at love.
Junior Chiara Lommer joined Fahey with a 3-0 singles record after a 6-4, 6-4 win against Kolie Allen. In the second set, Lommer and Allen exchanged three straight breaks of serve to eventually give Lommer a 5-4 lead. The lefty served out the match in the next game, cashing in on her second match point with an overhead winner at the net.
Freshman Lanie Van Linge picked up Michigan's final singles win on the afternoon, fighting off two match points en route to a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 win over Andrea Ballinger. Ballinger was back to serve for the match at 5-4, but Van Linge came through on the deuce point to get back on serve. It was all Van Linge from there as she won the next two games to seal the win.
The Maize and Blue grabbed two doubles wins from No. 14 Georgia Tech, as Lommer and Van Linge were first off court with a 6-2 victory.
Senior Brienne Minor and sophomore Alyvia Jones combined for a 6-3 win over the team of Victoria Flores and Valeriya Deminova. Minor and Jones won the final three games of the match to take the victory.
