ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team put together a strong effort on the second day of the Michigan Invitational, taking three doubles matches from Tennessee and five singles matches from No. 14-ranked Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 20) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
U-M put together a strong effort on the doubles court against Tennessee, taking three of four matches from the Lady Vols. Head coach Ronni Bernstein mixed up the lineup from the first day of action, and it paid off.
Senior Kate Fahey and junior Giulia Pairone played together for the first time this season and got a win. Freshman Anca Craciun and sophomore Bella Lorenzini combined for a 7-5 win, and junior Chiara Lommer and freshman Lanie Van Linge teamed up for a 7-5 victory as well.
Michigan kept the momentum going into singles against No. 14 Georgia Tech, winning six first sets against the Yellow Jackets.
Fahey was the first off court for the Wolverines, grabbing a 6-1, 6-4 win over Nami Otsuka.
Sophomore Alyvia Jones picked up her first win of the weekend, winning a 6-2, 7-6 (5) match against Gia Cohen. Lorenzini rounded out Michigan's straight-set winners with a 7-6, 6-4 triumph over Valeriya Deminova.
U-M won its final two matches of the day in third sets. Senior Brienne Minor won her first set, 7-5, against Jeannette Lin but dropped the second in a tiebreaker. Minor was able to pick up the third set, 7-5, keeping her perfect on the weekend.
Lommer also moved to 2-0 with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Kenya Jones.Â
The Wolverines will be back in action tomorrow (Monday, Jan. 21), hosting the final day of the Michigan Invitational. U-M will play No. 14 Georgia Tech in doubles at noon, with singles against Ohio State to follow.
