ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team grabbed four singles wins from Tennessee on the first day of the Michigan Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 19) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Junior Chiara Lommer picked up Michigan's first win of the afternoon in singles, dropping just two total games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over No. 93-ranked Ariadna Riley.
Senior Brienne Minor provided Michigan's second singles win of the day, defeating No. 91-ranked Kaitlin Staines. Minor fell in a 4-2 hole in the second set before winning five of the next six games to take a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Senior Kate Fahey, who is ranked No. 3, fell in a first-set tiebreaker to Sadie Hammond, 7-3. It was all tied at 3-3 when the players switched sides but Hammond took control late for the early advantage. Fahey responded by winning the first two games of the second set for the early break en route to a 6-1 win. The senior broke Hammond at 2-1 in the third, igniting a five-game run to secure the three-set victory (6-7, 6-1, 6-1).
Junior Giulia Pairone concluded Michigan's day with a victory, defeating UT's Gabby Schuck in three sets (6-4, 6-7, 6-1). With a set in hand, Pairone held a match point on Schuck's serve at 5-4 in the second. Schuck won the point to stay on serve at 5-5 as the two eventually entered a tiebreaker. Schuck took the upper hand at 4-2 in the breaker, eventually winning 7-2 to force a third. It was all Pairone in the deciding frame as she lost just one game in the 6-1 triumph.
Ohio State swept all four doubles matches from Michigan to begin the afternoon.
The Wolverines are back in action tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 20), hosting the second day of the Michigan Invitational. U-M will play Tennessee in doubles at 1 p.m., with singles against No. 14 Georgia Tech to follow.
