ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team shook off a sluggish start, rallying from an initial deficit to earn a 6-1 rout against Indiana on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 30) in front of a crowd of 509 at Phyllis Ocker Field. The Wolverines improved to 6-0 at home this season.
Michigan scored three apiece in the first and second halves, with six different Wolverines tallying goals, including freshman Katie Anderson -- who netted the first of her career -- and senior Marleise Emrhein with her first of the season.
Indiana struck first, however, scoring on the game's first penalty corner, at 11:56, with the direct shot from the left side of the arc. It was just the third time this season that U-M allowed the initial lead.
Sophomore Sofia Southam evened the score at the 20:20 mark, carrying the ball in from the left baseline before lifting it over a sprawled Hoosier goalkeeper for her second goal of the season. Junior Meg Dowthwaite netted the go-ahead and game-winning goal seven minutes later, at 27:37, after another left-side baseline carry from senior Emma Way, who dished the ball to the front of the net, where Dowthwaite banged it in for her sixth goal this season -- and fifth in five games.
Way scored herself in the waning minutes of the first half, at 31:05, on the direct shot of a Michigan penalty corner, shooting from the left side of the arc and finding the nearside corner. Junior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort and senior Regan Leavitt earned assists on the stop and the insert, respectively. It was Way's 13th goal of the season, tying her career best in the category.
Michigan scored three goals in a five-minute window early in the second half, with Emrhein contributing to two of the three. She assisted on Anderson's tally, firing a hard shot just outside the circle, which Anderson got her stick on from the near-side right post for her first collegiate goal at 44:33. Emrhein scored herself at the 49:09 mark with a rocket a step inside the left-side arc that soared to the opposite right corner. Freshman Tina D'Anjolell scored between the two, at 47:22, after carrying the ball into the circle from the right side; it was her second of the season.
Michigan outshot the Hoosiers, 30-6, and outcornered then, 8-4. Freshman goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned two saves, while Indiana's Sachi Ananias and Shelby Querry split time and combined for eight saves.
The Wolverines (8-4, 4-1 Big Ten) will hit the road next weekend, traveling Iowa City, Iowa, for a pair of regional matchups. Michigan will face Iowa at 3 p.m. CDT on Friday (Oct. 5) before playing Stanford in a neutral-site slate on Saturday (Oct. 6) at 2:30 CDT at Grant Field.
