COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team was doomed by a second-half goal in a 2-1 loss to No. 3 Maryland on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 23) at the Terrapins' Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The loss was the Wolverines' first in Big Ten Conference play and halted their win streak at five.
The score was even at halftime after senior Emma Way netted the equalizer late in the first half, at 23:07, for her 11th marker of the season. Junior Fay Keijer fed Way the ball into the circle on the left side, and she carried it from left to right across the front, depositing it into the cage to the lower-left corner.
After an active first half, neither team spent significant time in its attacking circle in the second. Maryland scored the game-winning goal at the 44:14 mark on a hard shot from Linnea Gonzales from the arc that was deflected in near the right post. It was Gonzales' second goal of the game; she tallied the first on a penalty corner at 10:33 with U-M down a player in its defensive unit.
Maryland nearly added another just three minutes after the game's first, intercepting a ball just beyond the Wolverine defensive 25 to force a breakaway. Freshman goalkeeper Anna Spieker charged out and forced the Terrapin attacker to the right, giving sophomore Halle O'Neill time to get back and cover the goal line for the defensive save.
Maryland outshot the Wolverines, 17-11, and outcornered them, 6-3, in the contest. Spieker earned seven saves in the Michigan cage, in addition to O'Neill's defensive save, while Terp goalkeeper Sarah Holliday stopped four of five U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines (6-4, 2-1 Big Ten) will return home for a pair of conference games next weekend, hosting Northwestern at 5 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 28) and Indiana at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 30) at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
