ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan rowing team began its fall season with a multi-piece scrimmage with Eastern Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 16) at Belleville Lake.
The two programs launched at 9 a.m. and raced three pieces at 3,000 meters in a head-to-head style format. U-M raced with both eights and fours boats. The Eagles brought one eight boat to compete as well.
Head coach Mark Rothstein felt the weekend provided a good workout for the team.
"It was great to race with Eastern Michigan and to see our team out on the water," he said.
"These events are important opportunities for us to apply the things we've been working on in practice to a race situation. As a staff, we some good things out there. At the same time, our team understands that we have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be this season."
Senior captain Meghan Gutknecht also saw a lot of positive takeaways for the Wolverines. She noted that just being active in a race situation made the team hungry for more.
"It was really exciting to get out there and race and have that race-day energy again," said Gutknecht.
"The whole team was really excited to get on the water and it was a high-energy day. We had a lot of fun and it made us excited to get back to practice, keep working and test ourselves out on the water again. We want to learn from today and continue focusing on what we have been focusing on in practice to apply that to racing.
The scrimmage marks the first of five fall dates for the Maize and Blue. U-M will travel to Ohio State for Sunday (Oct. 14) and Tuesday (Oct. 16) races in October, and the novice program will race at Michigan State at the end of that month (Oct. 28). The Head of the Charles event will race the week before (Oct. 21), and U-M will send one boat to that event as well before beginning off-water training later in the fall.
