ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference released its spring 2018 Academic All-Big Ten teams on Wednesday (May 30), with a record 159 University of Michigan student-athletes earning recognition for their work in the classroom.
U-M had 122 honorees in the fall and 77 in the winter, giving it 358 total in 2017-18. The overall total is 69 more than the 2016-17 academic year and an increase of nearly 100 over a two-year span. The 159 spring selections are the most for the Wolverines since the Big Ten started the awards in 2009-10.
Criteria for making the Academic All-Big Ten team includes a student-athlete being in at least their second academic year at their institution and maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
The breakdown of the 159 Michigan student-athletes on the list includes: nine from baseball, one from men's golf, 15 from men's lacrosse, five from men's tennis, 24 from men's track and field, five from women's golf, 16 from women's lacrosse, 29 from rowing, nine from softball, four from women's tennis, 35 from women's track and field and seven from water polo.
The Distinguished Scholar Award will be awarded at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school.
