STILLWATER, Okla. -- Posting a 77 in Sunday's (May 27) third round, University of Michigan senior golfer Kyle Mueller tallied a 229 54-hole total to tie for 117th and missed the first cut at the NCAA Championships held at the Karsten Creek Golf Course. With his missed cut, Mueller's season and career come to an end.
The top 15 teams and top nine individuals not from a qualifying team advanced to Monday's final 18 holes to determine the national champion. The top eight teams which moved on to match play for the national team title will compete on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"It is not the way I wanted to finish my college career, but these past four years with my coaches and teammates have been the best four years of my life," said Mueller. "I am excited to start a new chapter of my life while still representing the Block M, just in a slightly different way. I will always be a Michigan man and forever grateful for everything Michigan has done for me."
"I am so glad Kyle got to finish his college golf career at the national championship," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "He had one of the best seasons of any player in the country and I could not be more proud. The impact he made on our program was unbelievable, and I have a feeling he has a long career in golf in front of him."
Mueller's final collegiate event got off to a slow start on Friday (May 25) as two lightning delays saw his opening tee time delayed nearly three hours. When he was able to tee off, he made it through the first nine holes before play was called due to darkness.
As he returned early Saturday (May 26) morning, Mueller finished his first round carding a 79. With about 45 minutes to prep and head back out onto Karsten Creek, Mueller battled the course and temperatures reaching 95 degrees as he grinded his way to a 73 (+1), positioning himself tied for 115th with a 132, 36-hole total.
Playing in the afternoon wave of today's third round, Mueller made the turn three-over par and finished with a second three over side to post a 77. Despite the tally, he finished his collegiate career with a birdie on his final hole as he tied for 117th in the 156 player field.
Earning All-Big Ten and PING All-Midwest honors for the fourth straight season, Mueller closed his senior season recording three individual wins -- including the NCAA Columbus Regional -- as he tied the U-M record with six in his career. Â With his 70.76 per-round average, he led U-M for the fourth straight season, earned the Big Tens' Les Bolstad Award and lowered his own school record for a third straight year.
Mueller did not miss a start in four seasons playing in 50 straight events. He earned 16 top-five finishes and holds U-M's all-time scoring average at 71.71 per round.
