Junior Kate Fahey, currently ranked No. 29 in singles, will represent the University of Michigan women's tennis team at the NCAA Singles Championship this week (May 23-28) at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Fahey will face No. 3-ranked Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami in the first round on Wednesday (May 23) at 1 p.m.
WOLVERINE BITES
• Junior Kate Fahey is representing Michigan at the NCAA Singles Championship for the second straight season, becoming the eighth Wolverine in school history to make multiple appearances in singles. Fahey reached the quarterfinals of last year's tournament, earning ITA All-America honors.
• Kate Fahey is 27-8 on the season, moving her career record to 94-23 (.803). She is the 11th Wolverine in school history to reach 90 career wins, currently tied for ninth all-time in singles wins. Fahey is the only player in program history to feature a winning percentage of at least .800. She went 18-3 in dual matches, playing exclusively at No. 1.
• Kate Fahey will face No. 3-ranked Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami in the first round on Wednesday (May 23) at 1 p.m. Fahey and Perez-Somarriba faced each other in last year's singles tournament, with Perez-Somarriba coming away with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the quarterfinals. That is the only time the two have faced each other.
• Kate Fahey enters the NCAA Singles Championship ranked No. 29, earning the Big Ten's automatic singles berth as the highest-ranked player in the conference. Fahey has reeled in the awards this season, being named Big Ten Athlete of the Year, earning unanimous All-Big Ten honors and grabbing a spot on the Google Cloud Academic All-District At-Large Team.
• The winner of Wednesday's match will face the winner of Julia Rosenqvist (California) and Megan McCary (Oklahoma State). The NCAA Singles Championship is a 64-person draw with each match consisting of best-of-three tiebreak sets.
