ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Three University of Michigan student-athletes were named Google Cloud Academic All-District selections on Thursday (May 17) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The honorees include Adam Coon (wrestling), Kate Fahey (women's tennis) and PJ Ransford (men's swimming and diving).
Selected by CoSIDA members, the Academic All-District distinction is given to student-athletes for their combined athletic and academic accomplishments. All three student-athletes earned first-team honors and advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot, with first- and second-team Academic All-America honorees to be announced in June. To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 (on a scale of 4.00), have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Adam Coon | Wrestling
Coon recently wrapped up his collegiate career as one of the top wrestlers in University of Michigan history. A three-time All-American at heavyweight, he placed in the top three in each of his last three appearances at the NCAA Championships, including two trips to the championship finals. His 116-15 career record places him sixth in the U-M record book for career winning percentage (.885) and 22nd in total career wins. He also ranks eighth among the all-time pin leaders with 38 career falls. A leader on and off the mat, Coon is the first four-time team captain in program history. He is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten and NWCA All-Academic honoree who earned his undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering last spring and is completing a master's degree in space engineering.
Kate Fahey | Women's Tennis
Fahey was named the 2018 Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Year and was a unanimous All-Big Ten selection after helping the Wolverines to the Big Ten Tournament title. Fahey holds a 27-8 overall singles record entering next week's NCAA Singles Championship, highlighted by an 18-3 record at the No. 1 spot in dual matches. Fahey is a three-time All-Big Ten honoree and is currently ranked No. 29 by the ITA. Last year as a sophomore, Fahey earned Academic All-Big Ten plaudits and was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. She is majoring in international studies.
PJ Ransford | Men's Swimming and Diving
One of three team captains for the 2017-18 season, Ransford graduated in December with a degree in mechanical engineering and is now in graduate school at the College of Engineering pursuing a master's degree in the same field. Having sustained a cumulative 4.0 GPA, Ransford was the recipient of the NCAA Elite 90 Award for men's swimming and diving for the second consecutive year, an award given annually to the student-athlete with the highest GPA competing at the NCAA Championships. He was also the University of Michigan's male recipient of the 2018 Big Ten Medal of Honor and the recipient of a Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship. In the pool, Ransford was an All-American in the 1,650-yard freestyle and All-America honorable mention in the 500-yard freestyle at the NCAA Championships, and he won bronze medals in both events at the Big Ten Championships.
