ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A total of 10 University of Michigan varsity athletic teams have received Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA, in an announcement made Wednesday (May 16). These 10 teams posted multiyear APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.
For a fourth consecutive year, Michigan is the only Big Ten Conference institution to earn recognition awards in both football and men's basketball, with men's basketball now having earned the award in seven straight years.
Additionally, Michigan is the only Big Ten member to earn recognition in football, men's basketball and women's basketball.
U-M teams to receive Public Recognition Awards covering the four-year span of academic years from 2013-14 to 2016-17 are:
- Baseball
- Men's Basketball
- Women's Basketball
- Women's Cross Country
- Football
- Women's Golf
- Men's Gymnastics
- Softball
- Men's Tennis
- Women's Tennis
In addition to men's basketball having earned recognition in seven consecutive years, football, women's golf, men's gymnastics and softball have earned honors in four straight seasons, while baseball and women's cross country have garnered back-to-back honors.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. High-performing teams receiving awards posted APR scores ranging from 977 to a perfect 1,000.
Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 23.
