PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team saw its turnaround season come to an end after a 4-0 loss to No. 15-ranked Stanford in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday (May 12) at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
Stanford took the early lead behind the doubles point, winning the last two matches off court at No. 2 and No. 3.
U-M struck first in doubles play, with the No. 1 duo of juniors Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor recovering from a 3-1 hole to take a 6-4 win over the No. 3-ranked Stanford pair of Michaela Gordon and Emily Arbuthnott. The two sides traded breaks through the first three games before Stanford held serve for a 3-1 win. U-M was able to get back on serve at 3-3, but was broken once again to face a 3-4 hole. Michigan took advantage of a Cardinal double fault to tie the match at 4, with U-M winning the final two games.
Moments later, Stanford took a 6-4 win at No. 2 to turn attention to the match at No. 3.
It was tied at 5 at that moment, with both teams holding serve over the next two games to send the match to a tiebreaker. Sophomores Chiara Lommer and Lera Patiuk took the early lead in the breaker, seizing momentum when Stanford double-faulted to begin the affair. U-M won the first five points but had a double fault to put Stanford on the board at 5-1. It was all Cardinal from there as Stanford won seven straight points after facing the early 5-0 hole to clinch the doubles point.Â
Michigan won first sets at No. 1 from Fahey and at No. 4 from freshman Alyvia Jones.
Stanford extended its lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6, before picking up another straight-sets win a few minutes later at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2).
Fahey, who fought off a set point in the first set, won the first five games of the second set and looked poised to put Michigan's first point on the scoreboard. She could not finish in time, however, as the Cardinal won a 6-4, 6-1 match at No. 5 to clinch the match. Senior Mira Ruder-Hook suffered a late break in the first set and fell in an early 4-0 hole to start the second. She broke Janice Shin at 4-1 on a deuce point, but was broken herself in the ensuing game. When Shin went back to serve out the match, Ruder-Hook fought off one match point but could not complete the rally as the Cardinal took a 4-0 win.
Michigan completes the 2017-18 season with an 18-10 record after winning 14 of the last 16 matches to end the season. The Wolverines also won the 2018 Big Ten Tournament title.
Fahey will represent Michigan in the NCAA Singles Championships (May 23-28) at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
