PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and the first three matches off court in straight sets to shut out Hawaii, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon (May 11) at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Center. It is the 13th straight year that U-M has made it out of the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Michigan took the early lead by virtue of the doubles point, winning at Nos. 1 and 2.
At the top spot, juniors Brienne Minor and Kate Fahey breezed to a 6-0 win. The U-M duo took advantage of Hawaii double-faulting to lose its first two service games to take control of the match as the first duo off court.
From there, the other two matches on court stayed on serve for the majority of their matches. At No. 2, senior Mira Ruder-Hook and freshman Alyvia Jones held at 5-4 after winning the final four points of the game. Hawaii headed back to the service line to keep the match on serve, but U-M won the first two points of the game. Hawaii answered back with two straight of its own, but the Wolverines took a match point on the next point. Jones chased down an overhead from Hawaii with a forehand down the line which Hawaii put in the net to seal the first point of the match for the Maize and Blue.
Michigan took control early in singles play, winning all six first sets.
Minor provided Michigan its second point of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 to push her singles winning streak to eight matches. Minor jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first before breaking for the first set at 6-2. In the second, she broke on a deuce point for a 3-1 advantage and never looked back in the straight-sets win.
From there, it was a race to the finish as both Jones and Ruder-Hook were each a game away from wrapping up their second sets.
Jones came through first, putting an ace out wide on match point in a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 4. Jones broke late in the first set and never looked back in the match to give Michigan a 3-0 lead.
Moments later, Ruder-Hook had a pair of match points at No. 5. After the Wolverine missed out on the first opportunity, Hawaii double-faulted in the net on the second to wrap up the 4-0 victory for U-M.
Michigan advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and will face Stanford tomorrow (Saturday, May 12) at 4 p.m. PDT.
