STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan softball team completed the weekend series sweep at Penn State with an 11-1, five-inning decision on Sunday afternoon (April 8) at the Nittany Lions' Beard Field. The Wolverines have won seven straight games and 26 of their last 27.
Michigan put up six runs in the second inning and four in the third to break open the game and cruise to its second run-rule decision in three games. Junior second baseman Faith Canfield, who saw her 17-game hit streak halted a day ago, began anew with a two-hit, four-RBI effort at the top of the lineup. Senior first baseman Tera Blanco also posted two hits and two RBI. In all, six different Wolverines tallied base knocks in the series finale.
Sophomore outfielder Haley Hoogenraad initiated the Wolverine surge in the second with a one-out, two-run triple -- her second three-bagger of the season -- down the right-field line and to the wall. Canfield and Blanco both followed with RBI hits; the former on a two-run single up the middle and the latter on a double to left-center field.
Canfield added another two-run single up the middle in her next plate appearance in the third and scored when Blanco followed suit with an RBI single up the middle of her own two batters later.
Penn State spoiled the shutout bid with a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien (23-2) secured her third win of the weekend -- seventh in as many Michigan games -- with a one-hit, five-strikeout effort through three innings; it was freshman right-hander Sarah Schaefer who allowed the PSU run. Schaefer retired the next six batters she faced, with one strikeout, to close out the contest.
Michigan (31-7, 7-1 Big Ten) will play five home games over a six-day stretch next weekend, kicking off the homestand on Tuesday (April 10) with the rescheduled contest against Washtenaw County foe Eastern Michigan at 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
