FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Powered by 14 top-10 performances and double-digit career-best efforts, the University of Michigan women's track and field team turned in a strong showing against national caliber competition on day one at Arkansas' National Relay Championships on Friday (April 27).
Hammer thrower Courtney Jacobsen and mid-distance runners Claire Borchers and Jamie Morrissey were third, third and fourth in their respective events as the Wolverines impressed on the first day of their final major regular-season competition ahead of the Big Ten and NCAA postseason.
Gearing up for a run at the Big Ten 3,000-meter steeplechase title in two weekend's time (May 11-13), Borchers put her speed to the test in Friday's 1,500-meter competition and came away with a new career-best 4:23.12. Borchers took the bell for the final lap in fifth place, but a 69.43-second final lap was enough to bypass two runners and chop more than four seconds off her previous lifetime best in the event.
Jacobsen was the highest-finishing Wolverine in the field with her third-place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 59.86m (196 feet-5 inches) on her final throw. The mark was a career-best effort for the sophomore and it improved upon her standing as the No. 2 hammer thrower in Michigan history by 22 centimeters.
Those two were among the 15 career-best efforts on the day for the Wolverines.
Entering as the reigning Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week after a historic 1,500-meter performance at Stanford last weekend, Morrissey impressed once more with a hard-fought 2:06.20 over 800 meters for fourth place. Sticking with the leaders the whole way through, she came within just over half a second of the win.
Morrissey was chief among four U-M women who were top-10 at that distance, following up on a trio of first-year Wolverines -- Alice Hill, Mallory Barrett and Carola Jansohn -- who all established new collegiate PRs in the previous section. Hill took eighth overall in 2:10.15, followed closely by Barrett in 2:10.69 and Jansohn in 2:10.88.
Also impressing as a first-year Wolverine was Chloe Foster, who set a new career-best in the 400 meters and approached another in the 400-meter hurdles. Her 54.86 in the 400 made her the fourth-fastest freshman in Michigan history behind only Joyce Wilson (53.21), Carly Knazze (53.54) and teammate Jade Harrison (53.88). She followed it up with a 1:00.97 effort in the hurdles, less than a second shy of her best.
Harrison, now a sophomore, was the top Wolverine at both 200 and 400 meters, including a season's best 53.90 in the latter.
Running in what was essentially a time trial, Sophie Linn took the win at 5,000 meters in a career-best 16:35.20, leading a 1-2-3 finish with Madeline Trevisan and Meg Darmofal. Trevisan and Darmofal made their collegiate debuts at 5,000 meters in 16:46.69 and 16:53.09, respectively.
Linn's time will likely put her on the bubble for qualifying to the NCAA East Prelims as one of the top-48 in her event in the East Region.
Several Wolverines will be in action in field events Saturday, with the main "National Relay Championships" segment of the meet set for Saturday evening starting at 7 p.m. CDT. Michigan will have entries in the 4x100, distance medley, 4x800 and 4x400 relays.
