MAINVILLE, Ohio -- With a season-low 71 (-1) from sophomore Alisa Snyder and an even-par 72 by junior Elodie Van Dievoet, the University of Michigan women's golf team improved with a 290 second-round team tally today (Saturday, April 21) but maintained its seventh-place position at the 2018 Big Ten Championships with 588 36-hole total.
"Patience and commitment were our keys today, and overall the team did a good job," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "We got off to a better start and played some of the tough holes really well. The same two keys will be required for tomorrow's round, and we are excited for a strong finish."
Getting off to a solid start was key for the Wolverines in today's second round at TPCÂ River's Bend. Snyder opened her front side using two birdies to start two under par, while Van Dievoet was one under and sophomore Hannah Ghelfi made the turn even par to guide the Maize and Blue on the front stretch.
Despite some setbacks on the second nine, the Wolverines -- who posted 15 total birdies -- were able to use a season-low 71 (-1) from Snyder, an even-par 72 from Van Dievoet, a 73 (+1) from senior Kathy Lim and a 74 (+2) from Ghelfi to drop eight strokes from yesterday's first round (298) to put a 290 on the board. Despite the improvement, the Wolverines maintained their hold on the seventh position on the team leaderboard. U-M is just six shots back of cracking the top five.
With her second-round 73, Lim continued to pace the Wolverines individually as she is tied for 13th with an even-par 144 (71-73) 36-hole total. Defending champion Van Dievoet improved one spot and is tied for 20th at 146 (74-72), and Snyder's season-low 71 helped her jump nearly 20 spots as she is tied for 33rd at 148 (77-71).
"I'm really proud of Alisa today," said Dowling. "She nearly reached her lowest round of her career (at Michigan) today, which was actually here at last year's Big Tens. She came out with a great mindset and really made her day great. We will need more of that tomorrow."
The Wolverines will wrap up the Big Ten Championships on Sunday (April 22), playing the final round with Wisconsin for a second straight day along with Indiana.
