ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team completed the home portion of its schedule with a 7-0 win over Rutgers as part of Senior Day on Sunday (April 15) afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Maize and Blue grabbed the early lead, winning the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 1.
At the middle spot, freshman Alyvia Jones and senior Mira Ruder-Hook jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Rutgers won two straight to get the match back on serve at 4-3. It was all Michigan from there as the Wolverine duo won the next two games to secure a 6-3 victory.
It was much of the same from yesterday's match as juniors Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor fell in a 5-2 hole at No. 1. Fahey and Minor made up both breaks with a Minor hold in between to tie the match at 5. Fahey held on her serve in the next game to give Michigan its first lead of the match at 6-5. With the final game tied at 30-30, Fahey and Minor won the next two points as Minor's overhand at the net put the exclamation point on the 7-5 comeback win.
It was all Michigan in singles action as U-M won all 12 sets and did not allow Rutgers to win more than four games in any match.
Minor was first off court, winning all 12 games at No. 3 for a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Fahey was the next victorious Wolverine, dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the top spot.
Jones provided the fourth point for Michigan with the second shutout of the day, putting together a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4. In the final game, Jones battled back from a 40-0 deficit to win the final four points to keep her opponent off the board.
Senior Kara Hall grabbed her first dual-match singles win of the season, grabbing a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6. Hall took control midway through the first set and never looked back in Michigan's fourth singles win of the day.
Ruder-Hook came through next, winning 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5. The senior jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set en route to the 6-1 win. In the second set, Ruder-Hook won the final two games for the 6-3 victory.
Sophomore Chiara Lommer kept Michigan perfect on the afternoon, coming through with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2. Lommer took advantage of early breaks in both sets to grab U-M's seventh point of the day.
Michigan wraps up the regular season next Saturday (April 21) at Michigan State. The match will start at noon if held outdoors and at 3:30 p.m. if inside. Check MGoBlue.com for the most up-to-date information.
