ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and the first three singles matches off court in a 4-0 shutout of Maryland on Saturday afternoon (April 14) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The win marked career victory No. 400 for head coach Ronni Bernstein.
Michigan grabbed the early lead by taking the doubles point. U-M's No. 3 duo of freshman Alyvia Jones and senior Mira Ruder-Hook made quick work of Anastasiia Genel and Zoe Kulkarni, jumping out to a 3-0 lead en route to a 6-1 win.
The Wolverines then staged huge comebacks on the remaining two courts. At No. 1, juniors Brienne Minor and Kate Fahey were down 5-2 before reeling off three straight games to tie the match at 5.
At the same time at No. 2, sophomores Chiara Lommer and Lera Patiuk dropped three straight games to find themselves in a 5-3 hole. The Wolverine duo broke to get back on serve in the next game, with Lommer holding on her serve to knot the match at 5. U-M broke again in the ensuing game, as Patiuk served out the match for the 7-5 come-from-behind win.
Michigan won five first sets in singles action when Minor rallied from a 5-3 deficit in a tiebreaker to take a 7-5 decision for the 7-6 win at No. 3.
The Maize and Blue extended its lead to 2-0 behind a 6-2, 6-2 win from Ruder-Hook at No. 5. The senior took early leads in both sets to breeze to the straight-sets win.
It was a race to the finish from there as freshman Bella Lorenzini and Fahey were each a game away from winning. Lorenzini came through first, winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 to put Michigan on the brink. Lorenzini took advantage of a break in the middle of the second set to take control, picking up her second straight win.
Fahey came through moments later with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 win at the top spot. It was all Fahey in the first and third sets as she won her 23rd match of the season. Fahey started strong in the third set and rode the momentum from there, keeping Eva Alexandrova off the board in the final frame.
Michigan completes the home portion of its schedule tomorrow (Sunday, April 15), hosting Rutgers at noon. Ruder-Hook and senior Kara Hall will be honored prior to the match as part of senior day.
