ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior first baseman Tera Blanco knocked out two home runs, including a game-ending shot in the fifth inning, to headline the No. 17-ranked University of Michigan softball team's 11-1 win against Purdue on Saturday afternoon (March 31) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
It is the second career multi-home run game for Blanco and the first by the Wolverines this season. The Wolverine senior, who went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in on the day, led off the fourth inning with a solo blast that came down in the baseball outfield -- prompting the Michigan baseball team to empty the dugout while between innings in its contest against Delaware.
Blanco also cleared the center-field wall with two on and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, ending the contest with a three-run homer -- her seventh of the season. Junior second baseman Faith Canfield, who also posted three hits and two RBI, preceded her with an RBI double down the left-field line to pull U-M within one of the run-rule margin.
Michigan scored at least one run in every frame of the abbreviated contest and, as it did yesterday, took advantage of Boilermaker pitching miscues to earn an early lead, scoring runs on a wild pitch, an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk in the first.
Junior catcher Katie Alexander, who earned the RBI on the first-inning walk, drove in another with an RBI single through the left side in the third, while Canfield followed with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien (19-2) struck out two while allowing one hit and a walk through three innings to earn the win. Beaubien's stretch of 12 hitless innings pitched ended when Purdue bounced a leadoff single through the left side in the second.
Michigan (27-7, 3-1 Big Ten) will conclude the weekend series with a 1 p.m. slate against Purdue tomorrow (Sunday, April 1) at Alumni Field. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office or at the Alumni Field gate.
