ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team picked up its fourth straight win, shutting out Purdue, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon (March 25) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan jumped out to the early lead when it won the doubles point with a new lineup. At No. 1, juniors Brienne Minor and Kate Fahey fell in an early 2-0 hole before they won the next six games to grab a 6-2 victory.
The Wolverines were poised to take the match's first point easily, as freshman Alyvia Jones and senior Mira Ruder-Hook were up 5-0 at No. 3. Purdue fought off several match points over the next three games, however, to claw back to 5-3. At the same time, U-M's No. 2 pair of sophomores Chiara Lommer and Lera Patiuk were in the midst of rallying from a 4-2 deficit to take a 5-3 lead.
Ruder-Hook and Jones put the finishing touches on the doubles point, to hold on for a 6-3 win when the duo broke Purdue in the final game.
It was all Michigan in singles as the Wolverines won all six first sets to grab control of the team match.
Fahey was first off court, as she breezed to a 6-0, 6-2 win. Fahey won the match's first seven games before being broken in the second set at 2-1. Fahey took control from there as she rattled off five straight games to put Michigan's second point on the scoreboard.
Ruder-Hook was right behind her on the neighboring court, taking a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 to account for Michigan's third point.
It was a race to the finish from there as Lommer and Patiuk were each one game away from clinching the team match at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively. Patiuk came through first, winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 for the fourth point of the day for the Maize and Blue.
Lommer followed moments later with her own 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 to push Michigan's lead to 5-0.
Jones won her second straight match, taking a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 after taking control early in both sets.
Minor kept Michigan perfect on the afternoon with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win at No. 2. Minor raced out to a big lead in the first set, but Alex Sabe came all the way back to force a tiebreaker. Minor took a 6-1 lead in the breaker but Sabe once again answered with four straight points to get back within a point at 6-5. Sabe called Minor's forehand out on the backline during the next point but was overruled by the chair umpire to give Minor the 7-5 win in the breaker. It was all Minor in the second as she raced out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 6-1 win.
Michigan is back on the road next weekend, first traveling to Ohio State to take on the Buckeyes on Friday (March 30) at 4 p.m.
