COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team won its fifth straight match, rallying for a 4-3 win at Ohio State on Friday afternoon (March 30) at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan was down, 3-1, before winning the final three singles matches on court to remain perfect in Big Ten play.
With Michigan facing a 3-1 deficit and needing to win on the three remaining courts, sophomore Chiara Lommer got the momentum swinging in Michigan's favor. After losing the first set, 6-1, Lommer buckled down and won the final two sets to bring Michigan within a point at 3-2. Lommer won the first two games of the final set, but Olivia Sneed came back to tie the set at 4. Lommer came through in the clutch, winning the last two games to keep Michigan alive.
Senior Mira Ruder-Hook was next to bring Michigan closer, taking a three-set win at No. 5. After breezing to a first-set win, the senior dropped the second set to head to a third. It was all Ruder-Hook in the final frame as she eased to a 6-2 win to tie the team match at 3.
Freshman Bella Lorenzini was the lone Wolverine left on court, up a set but down, 5-4, in the second. Lorenzini saved two set points and broke on the deuce point to tie the set at 5. She held her serve in the next game and came through with her second consecutive break in the final game, sealing a 7-6 (5), 7-5 win for Michigan's fourth point.
Ohio State jumped out to the early 2-0 lead behind the doubles point and a win at No. 1. Freshman Alyvia Jones accounted for Michigan's first point of the day with a straight-sets win at No. 4 to halve the Ohio State lead. The Buckeyes countered moments later with a win at No. 2, setting up Michigan's late-match heroics.
Michigan completes its weekend road trip on Sunday (April 1) at Penn State, taking on the Nittany Lions at 11 a.m.
